Roulette is a casino game that relies on luck. It was supposedly invented in the 17th century by French mathematician Blaise Pascal. The game is played on a roulette wheel and a table with different betting options.
Outside bets are broader wagers that cover groups of numbers, while inside bets cover individual numbers. Each type of bet has different odds and payouts.
Origin
The history of roulette is a bit murky. However, it is generally believed that the game originated in the 17th century when French mathematician Blaise Pascal inadvertently invented the roulette wheel while trying to create a perpetual motion machine. This was a result of his study on probability. He may have also been inspired by other games at the time that were similar, such as portique, hoca, bassette and roly poly.
In the 18th century, the game gained traction with the French aristocracy and appeared in many gambling houses. It wasn’t until the Blanc brothers introduced their version of roulette that had a single zero pocket that roulette became a popular casino game. This version was also introduced in Germany where gambling was legal at the time.
