The game of roullete involves placing bets on a revolving dishlike device called a roulette wheel. Each player gives the dealer money and asks for “colour.” The dealer then hands out coloured chips that are equal to the value of the table’s minimum bet.
Players place their chips on the table until the croupier says, “No more bets”. The roulette wheel has 38 compartments, alternately painted red and black and numbered from 1 to 36, plus two green ones marked 0 and 00.
Origins
Although roulette is a popular game around the world, its origins are still somewhat unclear. Various fanciful stories about its origins have been suggested, including that it was invented by the French mathematician Blaise Pascal in the seventeenth century. Others have pointed to the Italian board game biribi as its origin. However, the earliest mention of the game is in France and dates back to the early 18th century. It is believed that the game found its way to America after that, and was brought over by European immigrants. It is also possible that the game was inspired by older games, such as hoca, portique and roly poly, which are similar in nature to roulette. However, none of these games were ever as popular as roulette.
